(05/12/23) Lufthansa Group has expanded its Green Fares
initiative to twelve long-haul flights,
including from Singapore and
Hong Kong to London, as well as from Bangkok to Vienna and Paris
to Bangkok.
The group first
introduced Green Fares on routes within Europe and to North
Africa in February, and since then over 500,000 passengers have
flown on the fare type.
Green Fares include the full offsetting of
individual, flight-related CO2 emissions with just one click
through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and a
contribution to high-quality climate protection projects.
With
SAF, a reduction of 10 percent of CO2 emissions is achieved, while
the remaining 90 percent is offset through climate protection
projects.
Lufthansa Group ensures that the amount of SAF
required for offsetting is fed into the airport infrastructure
within six months of purchase. As so called ‘drop-in’ fuel, SAF is
mixed with fossil fuel before being transported to the airport.
There is no refueling of individual flights with SAF.

The group’s compensation portfolio currently comprises 15 projects, including, most
recently, technology-based projects for the long-term binding of
CO2. The providers are myclimate, Climate
Austria, SQUAKE and ClimatePartner.
“People want to fly and be mobile, they want to
explore the world, visit friends and family or seal deals in
person. The growing demand for our Green Fares fare shows that
more and more people want to travel as sustainably as possible. We
support them with suitable offers. The Green Fares test on
long-haul flights will provide us with important insights for the
further development of our portfolio of more sustainable travel,”
says Christina Foerster, Member of Lufthansa Group Executive
Board responsible for Brand & Sustainability.
The long-haul Green Fares are currently available
on the following twelve test routes being operated by Lufthansa,
Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and SWISS:
– Bangkok – Vienna (BKK – VIE) – Brussels –
Kinshasa (BRU – FIH) – Frankfurt – Bengaluru (FRA – BLR) –
Frankfurt – Miami (FRA – MIA) – Hong Kong – London (HKG –
LHR/LCY) – London – Hong Kong (LHR/LCY – HKG) – Munich –

Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Lufthansa Group
Executive Board responsible for Global Markets & Network, said,
“Lufthansa Group continues to expand its innovative services
for more sustainable flying. We are pioneers worldwide with
simple, easy-to-book and individual offers for our customers. I am
delighted that we are now also offering Green Fares on selected
long-haul flights on all hub airlines. This also clearly
demonstrates the strength of our multi-hub and multi-brand
strategy.”
Lufthansa Group has set itself ambitious
climate protection goals and aims to achieve a neutral CO2 balance
by 2050. By 2030, Lufthansa Group wants to halve its net CO2
emissions compared to 2019 through both reduction and compensation
measures. The reduction share of the 2030 target was validated by
the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in August
2022.
The company is focusing in particular on
accelerated fleet modernization, the use of SAF, the continuous
optimization of flight operations, and offers for its private
travelers and corporate customers to make a flight or the
transport of cargo more sustainable. The group has also been
actively supporting global climate and weather research for many
years.
