World Bank expert team visits Thane

THANE: A delegation of experts including World Bank (WB) representatives visited Thane on Wednesday as part of the state government’s ambitious proposal to revamp its statistics sourcing system, officials informed.
Officials said the state wants real-time data of all districts at the click of a button. Presently, the state relies on outdated data which is compiled and relayed to it months later or in some cases even a year late.
Getting timely and updated data from across the district will assist the decision makers at Mantralaya to provide timely solutions or corrective action in various issues from departments like health, education, public works like roads and connectivity modes among others, officials said.
Accordingly, a proposal to upgrade the statistical sourcing network was made to the WB and experts and to design a relevant programme in collaboration with the directorate of economic and statistics along with MITRA, officials said.
A delegation of experts including Thomas Danielwitz, World Bank Senior Economist, Prof. Paul Chung, National Statistics, Singapore and Shreya Dutta-Mishra, WB made a pilot visit to Thane in the Konkan division for the programme and met Thane collector Ashok Shingare to understand the system followed by Thane in compiling and relaying the information to the state government.
“The project will help map the real time condition of facilities in each of the districts which will in turn also help the government reorganise its budget allocations accordingly. Officials said the initiative will bridge the gap between the current ground situation and the solutions offered by the government,” informed Vaibhav Kulkarni, district planning officer at the Thane collectorate.
The programme is presently in the nascent stage and a final design will be sketched after the team tours all the districts in the state and prepares and submits its observation to the state government.
“The teams will analyse the situation in the districts and suggest corrective action and if implemented, it will be executed with funding from the World Bank,” added Kulkarni.
