AHEMDABAD: In a bid to assess the viability of green hydrogen as an alternative energy source for the city gas distribution (CGD) consumers, Adani Total Gas Limited (ATGL) on Tuesday announced the launch of its green hydrogen blending project in Ahmedabad. The pilot project will involve blending green hydrogen with natural gas for at least 4,000 home and commercial PNG customers in the city.
Green Hydrogen will be produced using electrolysis of water with electricity generated by renewable energy. Hydrogen blending is less carbon intensive than burning gas but has the same heating capabilities.
The project is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of the next fiscal year FY 2025 and the percentage of green hydrogen will be gradually increased in the blend to upto 8% or more, depending on regulatory approvals. According to ATGL, the project will enhance existing infrastructure, diversify energy mix, develop hydrogen ecosystem, and reduce CO2 emission by upto 4%. The validated initiative will be rolled out in other markets.
Suresh P Manglani, executive director and CEO, ATGL, said, “This project will reduce our carbon footprint and by investing in such innovative projects, we are actively contributing to the evolution of the industry and driving progress in sustainable energy solutions.”
