Bharat Mart: Why India is planning a new warehouse in UAE, similar to China’s Dragon Mart

Bharat Mart, a proposed warehousing facility by India in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is expected to be operational by 2025, according to officials. The facility aims to provide a platform for Indian exporters to showcase their products under one roof, similar to China’s
Although the concept is still being finalized, Bharat Mart is likely to cover an area of over 100,000 square meters and will serve as a multipurpose facility, offering a combination of warehouse, retail, and hospitality units, officials told ET.
The aim is to establish a base and engage in trade from the UAE. The genesis of this project is the presence of similar facilities in China that have been beneficial for their exporters, an official said.
The project holds significant importance as India and the UAE have set a target to double their non-petroleum trade to $100 billion by 2030, as part of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that came into effect last year.

The complex will be located in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), which is a company of DP World. Abdulla Al Hashmi, the Chief Operating Officer of Parks and Zones at DP World GCC, stated that Bharat Mart is set to become a major distribution hub that supports the export of Indian products worldwide. This will particularly benefit Indian companies planning to expand their operations into Africa, Europe, and the US, he said.
Hashmi further explained that the facility will help reduce the time and cost associated with shipping goods between India and these countries.
Bharat Mart will consist of retail showrooms, warehouses, offices, and other ancillary facilities designed to accommodate various categories of goods, ranging from perishable items to heavy machinery. There is also a possibility of establishing a digital platform for global buyers to procure goods from the facility.

Ajay Sahai, the Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, emphasized the significance of Bharat Mart in assisting Indian exporters to showcase their products not only to buyers in the Middle East but also to Africa and the Central Asian region. Sahai also mentioned that the financing options and logistics facilities in the UAE further facilitate this process.
