Steel Plant: Steel unions protest against alleged MoU with Jindal company

VISAKHAPATNAM: The unions and workers of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) raised their voices against the plant management and alleged that a board meeting accorded an agreement with the Jindal Company through video conference as CMD and other directors were at various cities and towns for three days ago.
Plant worker unions demand to merge the VSP with Sail which has required captive mines of iron ore and others.
It is recalled that the plant workers’ agitations have crossed 1040 days. However, Blast Furnace III was shut down for a couple of years. Now, unions alleged that the plant management means the board of directors besides the independent directors had concluded to take help from Jindal to run the Blast Furnace III.
Plant workers’ unions leaders alleged that this kind of contract would benefit the private company and lose to the VSP. There would be Rs 3000 loss to the company on each ton.
Workers staged a protest on Monday after learning about an alleged contract between the plant and the private company. A few workers prepared to seize the entire sector 7 in which CMD and other directors are staying.
As per the plant sources, the private company would supply the iron ore and coal to run the BF III, which would generate around 2 lakh metric tons of steel per month. For this, it needs Rs. 800 crore material, which would allegedly be supplied by the private company.
The steel plant recognised union president Ayodya Ram told TOI that of the two lakh MT steel production, 90,000 MT should be given to Jindal and the plant has to pay the raw material cost to the private company through the sale of the remaining 1.1 lakh MT steel in a month. If the plant fails to pay the money, it should pay 12% interest along with the money.
“We will oppose this alleged move by the management after the return of CMD to the city. When Tata and SAIL are ready for the help, why management has been taking up diversion ways” a worker K Jashua said.
It has prepared a strategic plan for the infusion of much-needed liquidity in the company which has been discussed with its executives and workers’ unions and the management is moving ahead with its plan to start the Blast Furnace III on December 30. Further, he added that management is committed to transparency and ethical practices and denied allegations.
