The pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Stars reached the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open 2024 badminton tournament in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

The second-ranked Indian pair defeated world number 36 French pair Lucas Cor and Ronan Labar 21-11, 21-18 in the round of 16 of the Ness doubles event.

Along with men’s doubles, India also got success in women’s doubles event. India’s number 24 pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crusto have also made it to the quarterfinals. They defeated Japan’s No. 9 pair Wakana Nagahara and Mayu Matsumoto 21-19, 13-21, 21-15 in three games. Wakana Nagahara and Mayu Matsumoto are two-time world champions and former world No. 1 pair.

At the same time, Kidambi Europe was eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to world number 20 Angus Ng Ka Long of Chinese Taipei 21-13, 21-17.

Satwik-Chirag made supermarket in both the games
Satwik and Chirag created their market right from the initial game. The Technician pair scored nine consecutive points in the first game to take a 10-1 lead. Although Corvey and La managed to reduce the gap by taking the game from 14-4 to 14-11, the Indian badminton players once again regained control and won the game without any mistakes.

The French pair took a five-point lead in the second game at 11-6. However, after the break Chirag-Satvik created the marketplace and took its name.

The match between Satwik and Chirag lasted for 39 minutes.

Ponnappa and Castro won the first and third games
Ponnappa and Castro secured their highest-ranked pair against Japan with a 21-19, 13-21, 21-15 win.

In the opening game of the match, both were leading 6-6, but the Indians went ahead 10-6. However, Matsumoto and Nagahara soon broke back to 16–16. Ponnappa and Castro were able to produce their best results under pressure and won the first game 21–19.

The Japanese pair were completely dominant in the second game. Skip the aggressive play of the Indian pair, who committed one lie after another and lost 13-21.

However, Ponnappa and Crasto once again secured their place in the Classic quarter-finals with a 21–15 second game.

The match between the Japanese pair of Ponnappa and Castro lasted for more than an hour.

No Indian has won the Malaysia Open yet
