India’s star tennis player Rohan Bopanna created Grand Slam history by entering the doubles event at the Australian Open 2024.
Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden won the quarterfinals of the Australia Open on Sunday. They registered a straight set win against the Argentinian pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.
With a win in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Bopanna will become the world No. 1 men’s doubles player at the age of 43. When the listing is updated, he will be the oldest player to be ranked No. 1 in tennis history.
Bopanna won easily in the quarterfinals
Bopanna and his partner registered a comfortable 6-4, 7-6 (5) win in the quarter-finals in one hour and 46 minutes. The Indo-Australian pair, on the other hand, received a play from unseeded pair Tomas Machak and Zhenzhen Zhang.
Bopanna entered the Australian Open with Britain’s highest ranking of No. 3.

Bopanna has one Grand Slam title
Bopanna won the mixed doubles title at the French Open in 2017 with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski. However, Bopanna has been runner-up twice at the US Open in Men’s Doubles in 2010 with Pakistan’s Eham-ul-Haq Quresh and in 2023 with Ebden.

Only last year, Bopanna became the oldest person to reach the final of a Grand Slam in the Open Era. He and his partner Ebden lost in the final of the US Open 2023. Bopanna made his debut 20 years ago.
Bopanna is also the oldest player to win a doubles title in a Masters 1000 event. He achieved this feat last year at the age of 43 in the prestigious Indian Football Wales tournament with Ebden.
