A total of seven players, including India’s star tennis player Rohan Bopanna and squash player Joshna Chinappa, will receive the Padma Shri award. The Padma Awards for 2024 were announced on Thursday (January 25) on the eve of Republic Day.
Of these, 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Vibhushan and 110 Padma Shri awards will be given. There are seven players in the 110 grade. These awards are given by the President of India. Its ceremony takes place every year in March or April at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Bopanna in the final of Australian Open
43 year old Bopanna is in Australia these days. He is participating in the Men’s Doubles category of the Australian Open. He and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden have reached the final. The final match will be played tomorrow i.e. on 27th January. When the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) updated the rankings, Bopanna became the world number-1 doubles player at the age of 43. With this, he will be the oldest player in the world to achieve number-1 rank.
Bopanna has one Grand Slam title
Bopanna won the mixed doubles title at the French Open in 2017 with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski. Bopanna has been runner-up twice in doubles at the US Open in 2010 with Pakistan’s Eham-ul-Haq Quresh and in 2023 with Ebden.
Joshna Ch Quinappa gets gold medal in Commonwealth Games
Channappa has won one gold (2014) and one silver (2018) medal in the Commonwealth Games. He has won two silver and three bronze medals in the Asian Games. He has won four medals in doubles at the World Champion Championship, which also includes a gold medal in 2022.
