India’s star tennis player Rohan Bopanna has won the first Australian Open win of his career. 43-year-old Indian star Bopanna along with his Australian friend Matthew Ebden won the double championship.
The Indian-Australian pair defeated the Italian pair of Simon Bolelli and Andrea Vassori in straight sets 7-6 (0), 7-5 at the Rod Laver Arena. The final clause, which lasted for about an hour, included the last part of the Bopanna-Ebdon pair.
This is the second Grand Slam title
This is Rohan’s second Grand Island glory. Earlier in 2017, Bopanna had won the mixed doubles title at the French Open with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski. He was a doubles partner with Pakistan’s Esham-ul-Haq Qureshi in 2010 and was twice runner-up at the US Open with Ebden in 2023.
Bopanna last won the Grand Island Championship 6 years ago. He became mixed doubles champion at the French Open with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski.
Last year lost the final with Sania Mirza
Bopanna had lost the mixed doubles final in this tournament last year with former Indian star Sania Mirza. Then the Indian pair was defeated by the British pair.
The pair of Rohan and Sania had to face defeat in the mixed doubles final last season.
Last year Bopanna was the oldest player to reach the Grand Slam final.
Only last year, Bopanna became the oldest draw to qualify for a Grand Slam final in the Open Era. He and his partner Ebden lost in the final of the US Open 2023. Bopanna made his debut 20 years ago.
Bopanna is also the oldest player to win a doubles title in a Masters 1000 event. He achieved this feat last year at the age of 43 along with Ebden in the Indian Wells tournament.
